Understanding the various components of Air Handling Units

Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems setup at industrial and commercial establishments have an air handling unit or AHU as a significant device. As their name suggests, these units are significant to manage and condition the air according to the necessary requirements.

However, the general functionality of these units cannot be discussed in a single sentence. These units are made up of several components, each carrying out a different function. Here are some of the ahu components that may be contained in the equipment.

  • The centrifugal fans can circulate the air to several parts of the sections in the building. Typical fan types present are Backward Curved, Backward Inclined, Airfoil, and Forward Curved. The selection of the fan will rely on the air volume and the static pressure necessary for the system. Usually, the system designer will use specialized software to make this selection.

  • The housing that includes all the other components of an AHU is typically made of metal; some are painted to stop corrosion. In sections where the coil and the fans are located, 1-2 inches of polyurethane foam or PU is used to protect them from stopping the condensation on the panel. A drain pan is also utilized as a precaution in the episode of water condensation.

  • Cooling Coils can cool and dehumidify the air. Direct expansion cooling and chilled water cooling coils are present based on the system design. These coils are arranged in rows with diverse fin spacing. Copper tubes and aluminum fins are used in the design of the coils. The corrosion resistance hydrophilic fins are also used because of their lower resistance and cost to the air velocity.

  • During winter, the level of humidity in the air can be low, thus causing discomfort to the occupants. The humidity of the air is enhanced by using humidifiers.

Selecting the right AHU manufacturers in India is an important task as budget, and efficiency goals may differ.
